Martlet 2 was designed to fly on the largest commercial rocket motor available – a Cesaroni Pro150 O8000. Measuring 3.12m long, Martlet 2 was launched in September 2015 in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada USA.
Traveling at almost Mach 3 and 2km above the ground, a carbon fiber panel on one of the fins delaminated. The fin lost structural integrity and the rocket spiraled out of control. The remains of Martlet 2 are proudly displayed in the Dyson Centre for Engineering Design in the Engineering department.
